There is so much strength in vulnerability.

When I became a nurse, I expected to spend the majority of my time providing care, skills, and tips to others. What I did not expect was how much my patients would give me in return. They have become some of my best teachers over the years, teaching me lessons that have had a significant impact on my life.

Here are ten unforgettable lessons I have learned from the amazing people I have cared for.

1. Cherish the Small Moments

Mr. Andrews was diagnosed with advanced cancer when he was in his seventies. Despite his dire prognosis, he insisted on watching the sunrise every morning from the window. "Look at that," he would say, with a hint of wonder in his voice. "A daily miracle, free of charge."

I once asked him if he ever harbored resentment toward his illness. He shook his head. "I wasted too many years trying to achieve big goals. Life is beautiful because of the small things, like holding hands, laughing, and sunrises."

I have never had the same perspective on sunrises since.
