The Life That Chose me
Did I choose to be a nurse or did nursing choose me?
My journey as a nurse began six years ago, motivated by a desire to help others. As I stepped into this world, I was filled with anticipation and a sense of purpose. It was as if nursing chose me, drawing me into a life full of profound moments and significant challenges that have shaped who I am now.
The highs
In the beginning, each shift felt like a whirlwind. The joy of seeing patients recover and return home healthy was unmatched. Still is! I recall an elderly gentleman who, after weeks in the intensive care unit, held my hand and thanked me with tears in his eyes. Moments like these make all those sleepless nights and missed family gatherings worthwhile.
The lows
However, the journey has not been without its challenges. There are times when the emotional weight feel unbearable. Losing a patient, especially one I have grown close to, leaves an indelible mark on my heart. I remember a young mother who bravely battled cancer, her spirit unwavering even in her final days. Her family’s heartbreak was palpable, and I struggled with feelings of helplessness.Supporting her family during their grief was one of the most difficult things I have ever done.
